LEARNING OUTCOMES
• Explain the purposes of the Standards Act and its relevance to SABS Standards.
• Discuss the continued existence, objectives and functions of the SABS.
• Demonstrate awareness of the basic principles and requirements regarding management of
the SABS.
• Describe the purpose and operation of an Advisory Forum and Government Consultative
Forum under the Standards Act.
• Debate the concept, purpose and requirements of a National Norm for the development of standards
(including identification of SANS1-1).
• Identify the linkages to, and relationship between, the ways in which SABS Standards goes about
developing standards, and the requirements/ contents of the Standards Act.
• Identify the requirements of the Standards Act and SANS 1-2 with regard to the recognition of
Standards Development Organizations and debate the merits of standards development by
organizations other than the SABS.
• Discuss the purpose of, and process for, the incorporation of South African National Standards
into law.
• Identify the relationship between the Standards Act of 2008 and the National Regulator for
Compulsory Specifications Act of 2008.
