• Discuss the role of the SABS and SABS Standards in standards development.
• Understand and comment on the concept, purpose and benefits of standards and standardization.
• Discuss (in basic terms) the international standards environment and explain the role of SABS
Standards in the international standards environment.
• List and describe the range of documents published by SABS Standards.
• Explain the standards development process, including its stages and basic terminology.
• Explain the difference between locally developed standards and adopted standards.
• Discuss the purpose and composition of technical committees, as well as the meaning of
consensus in the context of standards development.
• Identify functions and role-players in the standards development process.
• Understand the purpose and system of standards maintenance.
